Milwaukee Locksmith Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to have my car present to have a transponder (computer chip) key made?

A: In most cases you do. There are some cars that we can clone your key, but it is a slightly more expensive way to go. Call ahead of time to determine if your key can be cloned.

auto locksmith faqsQ: If I lost all my car keys, can I have a new one made?

A: Yes, we can make you a new key if the VIN number of your car is available. Proof of ownership will be needed. For older model cars cost may increase because other methods may be needed to produce the key, since database information is continually purged as new information is added.

Q: If my car uses a transponder/computer chip key, can you make me a non-transponder key to open the door?

A: Yes, but remember the key will only open the door, it will not start the car.  You also have to be careful not to try to start the car with a no-chipped key as you can put the vehicle in lock down mode anywhere from 5 to 24 hours, depending on the brand.

Q:My car uses a separate key and remote. Can you supply and program a new remote for my car?

A:  Yes, and we have most remotes in stock going back 10 model years.  It is always best to called first to make sure we have what you need in stock.

Q: If a purchase a key or remote online will American Locksmiths cut and program them for me?

A: Yes we will, but please note that cutting the key is at your risk, if a miss-cut is made, American Locksmiths is not responsible.  Because many of the remotes and transponder keys purchased online are not OEM, many times the quality is low, or in terms of proximity keys, you often do not get the proper item– remember this technology has become very complex.  American Locksmiths will try to program your online purchases, but if they fail to program, you will still need to pay the programming fee.  Please see us first because most of the time, when buying from American Locksmiths, the products you need (which include cutting and programming), do not cost anymore than purchasing online, and you always get OEM products.  If Amercian Locksmiths, LLC fails to program an item it sells, then you pay nothing.
